Why does one get started in blogoverse. For me it was a combination of things, the fallout out of the War in Iraq, the fallout of the Canadian Election and the situation in Sudan. The common thread for me are the blatant inconsistencies of left-wing ideology and my desire to speak out against it. Thus the (written) journey began on April 2, 2004 with a letter to Prime Minister Martin with a copy to my (then) local candidate MP Janko Peric and continues with this blog today. Here is the letter:
Subject: Ethnic Cleansing and possible Genocide in Sudan
Dear Prime Minister Martin and Minister Peric,
It was with great concern that I learned of the situation in Darfur, Sudan in reading Gregory Stanton’s column in the Globe and Mail, “Bloodbath in the making” in the April 2 edition of the Globe and Mail.
Prime Minister Martin, in your acceptance speech at the Liberal leadership convention on November 14, 2003, you spoke of your desire to “ensure that Canada’s place in the world is one of influence and pride”. During this speech you also spoke of Canada’s responsibility to the world.
Many Canadians expressed pride in not joining the American led coalition mission into Iraq, since the evidence to join was not compelling. However, it appears that evidence in Sudan points us in no other direction but to act to stop this injustice.
I respectfully ask that you call on world leaders and members of the United Nations, especially the UN Security Counsel to pass a resolution:
1) requiring the government of Sudan to immediately end the attacks and killings of civilians in Darfur by government forces and militia; and if the government of Sudan fails to do this,
2) authorizing member states
to send peacekeeping troops to Darfur to stop the systematic murder of the people of Sudan by the Janjaweed and Sudanese military.
Please follow the call to action outlined in your own speech and please do not allow a repeat of the genocide of the Rwandan Tutsis to happen to the people of Sudan.
Respectfully yours,
Greg Staples
