When did the word Christian become a slur?

I know this is not an original thought, but it is bugging me today.  I guess before a became a relapsed Catholic (stolen fromKathy Shaidle, check out her site,  http://relapsedcatholic.blogspot.com/) it wasn't such a big deal to me.  But since I am an ecumenical at heart I take this insult personally.

I guess when the forces of moral relativity and marxism collide it is the Christians who come out on the short end.  Besides those white male Christians are the bourgeois keeping everyone down, aren't they?

But what about tolerance?  But we know that that actual means tolerate the new thinking and everything else be damned.

But of course when it is convenient the left will invoke Christianity, sort of... Consider the DNC last night.  We have a memorial to 9/11 ending with Amazing Grace, well the music anyways.  And then we have former President Clinton quoting scripture "Be not afraid".  What happened to the separation of church and state that liberals are using expunge any references to God?  Or is it wrong only when conservatives appeal to God?

A colleague of mine, in explaining the problem with President Bush II, was that he used his morality in making decisions.  Oh the horror!  How dare he use a consistent code to try to reach a decision.  How dare he pray to God.  You might say that if it was good enough for Lincoln it should be good enough for Bush, but that unfortunately was another time and another place.

I guess what I am trying to say is can't we all just get along?
