There is just so much to say about the bombing of Christian Churches (although that may be redundant) Church Bombs: Top Insurgent Blamed. First of all, is this the way to build support?
As has been explained to me by my colleagues, terrorism is just military by other means. There is nothing inherently wrong about it, since these people have so little, this is the only means at their disposal. Furthermore, Michael Moore has called these people freedom fighters and the equivalent of the American Revolutionary Minute Men. Now of course I think this is nuts, but let us ignore that for the moment. So these "freedom fighters" (I can't write it without scare quotes of course, since if they win, they will set up a Taliban regime in Iraq, and there go the freedoms) decide the best way to strengthen there position both internally and internationally is by car bombing Churches. By some reports one bomb was set off during a mass, killing at least 14 people.
Of course there is no moral equivalency here. The coalition troops (that's right coalition, not unilateral...USA, UK, Australia, Poland, Italy, etc....not exactly unilateral) do not target Mosques, even though the terrorists hide there. I wonder if that might change...
Which brings me to this report:US troops surround Najaf home of Shiite militia leader. Swift and measured response. Well at least that is my assumption anyway. CNN quotes that al-Zarqawi was probably responsible for the church bombings, whereas it is the home of Sadr being targeted. But the timing does not seem to be coincidental.
