As of last night Canada had 3 Olympic medals and I thought to myself, we suck! Of course everyone will decry the lack of funding for our poor athletes and hold this up as the reason why. Well I think we have boxed ourselves into a corner over this one. The Liberals held Socialized Healthcare up as the key Canadian Value that needs to be protection and we the people happily went along. Problem being we all know Healthcare is broken and it has become a money pit. But how we justify public expenditures on a luxury like Olympic funding as long as there is no improvement in waiting lines?
Then I thought, hmmm, the $2 Billion of the Long Gun Registry would have gone quite far in funding athletes, coaches and infrastructure. There are around 200 Canadian athletes in Athens, so that is $10 Millon/athlete. That should get us an extra medal or two! Hey, the sponsorship scandal money would have provided $625K/athlete and what would have convinced Quebecors to stay better than another medal in Rhythmic Gymnastics?
Note: After I wrote this I saw we won gold in gymanistics. So maybe we don't need the long-gun registry money after all.
