Higher standards means lower medal count

Before the Olympics I heard the whining the Canada would have a lower medal count due to the higher qualificition standards. This seemed absolutely ludicrous to me. How would get worse results if we set the bar higher?

Well, for the first time I heard a credible reason why. By setting the standard so high we cause our athletes to peak to soon. Thus they are exhausted (mentally, physically or both) by the time the Olympics roll around. Considering NBC cited this as a problem for the US track team, it appears this is more than just a Canadian excuse.
