Fool me once...

Paul Wells is upset that the National Post (and I guess by extension us bloggers) are more upset about MP Parrish's comments than the so-called bridging of the democratic deficit by PM Martin.

Hint to assignment editors, especially at the poor, lost National Post: when a back-bench MP calls Americans "idiots," it is actually less important than when a prime minister plays Canadians for fools.

My take is that we Canadians expect our Politicians to lie to us. Everyone knew in the last election that the Liberals have a "Hidden Agenda", it is just that deep down most agree with it. The problem with the Conservative "Hidden Agenda" was that no one was quite sure what exactly it was, making it harder to buy into. It is clear to me that same-sex marriage was something that the many Liberals (and NDPers, BQs, Greens and Conservatives) agree with. In the case of the Liberals, NDPers, BQs and Green it is something in their platforms. It is also clear that it is one of these issues that no one wants to debate in Parliament, lest the say something that will haunt them later.

So the obvious solution is to let the Supreme Courts do the dirty work. Everyone knew going into the last election that PM Martin would appoint Supreme Justices in favour of same-sex marriage. We also knew that selection oversight was a lie as well. So no surprises here.

MP Parrish on the other hand is a different story. We expect a level of civility from our Politicians and MP Parrish has proven, yet again, that she is unfit to serve as a public official.
