The academy of the overrated

So I just finished email Paul Wells wrt his informal questionnaire. His last question was to whether or not Mystic River was great art or wildly overrated. Well I had to admit to not seeing it, but in general I do not like (or get more likely) what Hollywood hypes up. The next spot on my morning reading was the Post and Anne Kingston has a whole article on the subject. Here is a partial list if who I think is overrated. I will add more as I think of them.

I would have to say that Number 1 on my list is Al Pacino. I have not seen one if his movies where it does not look like he is playing himself or mailing it in.

Lost in Translation was completely overrated. As was American Beauty.

I don't get the obsession with Elvis Presley. Must be an age thing (I was 4 when he died).

I agree with Anne Kingston that Madonna can't sing. It would not be fair of me to criticize Quentin Tarantino's directing, because I have only seen Pulp Fiction (overrated) but his acting on Alias is truly awful.

I liked JFK and Platoon by Oliver Stone. The Doors was ok, Natural Born Killers and Any Given Sunday were unwatchable, for entirely different reasons.

The whole gangster genre is overrated. Vampires as well. For the same reason for me, the glorification of evil. The whole Dracula as sexy thing. I don't get it. Here is a guy who slowly consumes you until you are an an empty shell. I don't think C.S. Lewis could have come up with a better description of a devil.

As a filmmaker I don't think Michael Moore is overrated. His films are very compelling and well crafted. He has far too much influence politically though.

While I am on that, the political opinions of actors. What makes them more qualified than say me?

The Oscars, Emmys and Grammys are all overrated. It is constant stream of awards I don't care about (can we just give best actor, actress, director and movie awards and get on with our evenings) or given to pieces of art I have never heard of or will never see/here. But I guess that is more a reflection on me than the arts...

I guess it goes without saying that I think Trudeau was overrated.

The "Olympic Spirit" is way overrated. As is the United Nations for that matter.

Leonard Cohen can't sing, but he writes cool lyrics.
