I hope this is not true

Joel Fleming has a concerning post regarding the Liberal budget. Apparently they are considering buying Kyoto credits to help them say they are reaching their targets.

The federal government is eyeingthe purchase of $1.4-billion in credits from foreigncountries to make up for a shortfall in the reductionsof greenhouse-gas emissions Canada agreed to in theKyoto accord....Spending on credits would begin in fiscal 2005-06 with$450-million, a third of which would be sent overseas, and rise to $625-million in 2009-10, when just overhalf would be committed to projects outside of Canada. All told, nearly $1.5-billion would be spent inforeign countries in the five years in the plan.

Wonderful. Not only are we indirectly harming our economy through emission-reducing measures, now we're taking money straight from the taxpayers' pockets so PM can look good for Jacques, Gerhard and the gang.

I actually think that Chirac, Schroeder, et al are the least of PM Martin's concerns. I fear that the Prime Minister is buying off the NDP and Bloq Quebecois, with our billions, to keep his minority government afloat.
