Speaking of Liberal "persuading" here is a CTV article about Kyoto spending in the upcoming budget. It is all about saving the world, right?
...The renewed cash commitment to fight global warming is, the report says, a deliberate strategy of attracting left-leaning voters. The paper says Paul Martin's government believes it could win up to eight more seats in B.C. alone. However, some in the party think winning four more seats is a more realistic goal.
But as the government puts more money into Kyoto, the Globe says Canadians should expect a slight re-branding of the entire program, with the Liberals playing down the Kyoto name and playing up the term sustainable development.
The paper says that's because the Liberals are trying to gain some distance from some of the negative reaction to the international program which came into effect in Canada this week.
How could I have fallen for that...And I love the re-branding thing. After eight years of doing nothing Kyoto they are going to give up on the whole concept. Beautiful.
And while Canada spends considerable sums on Kyoto in the coming years, the Globe also says Canadians can expect some monetary advantages.
There could be incentives for people to buy fuel-efficient, hybrid cars. And there could be tax breaks, such as allowing businesses to write off investments in new generation plants that draw heat and power from the same source.
Before you go out and buy a hybrid car think about this. What is the biggest component of gas price? Tax. So you go and buy one of these cars and save money on gas. Remember the taxman always gets his. Since the government will feel the pinch they will have to introduce a mileage tax. Think I am making this up?
...Thus the Oregon government is considering a system where Oregon drivers get taxed for every mile they drive within the state. In the interest of fairness, the Oregon government does not want to tax drivers for miles they put on their cars outside of the state. Thus the tax collector cannot simply look at the odometer of a car and collect revenue accordingly. Instead the Oregon government would like to add a GPS (Global Positioning System) to every car that would track what percentage of a cars miles were driven in Oregon. Such a system could add up to $225 to the cost of a new car.
So not only to you have a crappy car, but you have Big Brother on board with you.
