Check out the story on Politics regarding the sponsorship inquiry where Christina Lewand outlines some of the details on Jean Lafleur of Lafleur Communcations (go to 50:41). Here are the highlights (or lowlights if you please)
- over a 5 year period (95-00) firm made $32 Million direct business with the federal government and $28 Million with Crown Corps
- accounted for 78% of his business
- hired his children and his wife and combined they made $12 million in that period
- according to the Auditor-General he received commissions for simply delivering cheques and many examples of over billing
I guess all of that wining and dining of Liberals at his private box at the Molson Centre (now Bell Centre) paid off, not to mention the salmon fishing trips.
Well that and $15,839.16 in direct kickbacks to the Liberal Party. Oh that and $58,695.08 from Lafleur Communications to the Liberal Party.
If the Lafleur in Gowlings Lafleur Henderson LLP is somehow related it is even bigger. But I sense that Lafleur is a pretty common name in Quebec so probably not.
