Or should it be, with friends like these who needs enemies.
The former leader of the Marijuana party says he's joining the Liberal party where he'll have a chance to further the cause of legalizing marijuana.
Marc-Boris St-Maurice, who ran in Prime Minister Paul Martin's riding in 2004 and won only 221 votes, says he's now a member in good standing of Martin's party.
...If any party is going to move toward legalization of marijuana it's the Liberal party, he says, and he wants to help develop policies and programs to address the issue.
I know this separates myself even further from the libertarians amongst the Blogging Tories but I am not in favour of this. I can see the logic of decriminalization (although I probably still would not support it) but legalization seems like a bad idea to me. However when I looked at the polling information there is more support for it that I would have thought.
"Do you strongly support, somewhat support, neither support nor oppose, somewhat oppose, or strongly oppose the government regulating and taxing marijuana as it does beerm wine and spirits?
Stongly Support: 29%
Somewhat Support: 24%
Neither: 9%
Somewhat Oppose: 10%
Strongly Oppose: 27%
Unsure: 3%
Maybe the Liberals are on to something here. Somehow I don't see it happening.
