When ideologies collide

Although I am pro-life, I don't blog about it much. However the blogosphere has been perculating a couple of interesting stories about abortion so I thought I would chime in. First (via Bourque News) we see that the US is trying to stop the UN from declaring that abortion is a fundamental human right.

...Abortion has dominated the meeting on women's rights. The US has insisted abortion should not be recognised as a human right, at a review of progress ten years after a major conference on women's rights.
The issue has dominated the opening proceedings of the UN session organised to re-affirm the world's commitment to the Beijing declaration.
The US has submitted amendments insisting that any new declaration did not create "the right to abortion".

On certain issues it seems there is no room for disagreement and abortion is one of those. Not only do proponents was it legalized but declared that any country that does not make abortion legal is a human rights violator. This is similar to the arguments with same-sex marriage. It does seem strange to me that it is fundamental that a women as the right to kill her unborn child. I understand that countries have declared it legal, but is it fundamental? If that is fundamental then what is not? It reminds me of the argument about murder; is it wrong because it is illegal or is it illegal because it is wrong. To the pro-choicers it is obviously the former.

Well, sort-of (Hat-tip Shotgun):

A Republican lawmaker in Maine has introduced a bill to prohibit abortions based on the sexual orientation of the unborn baby.
State Rep. Brian Duprey wants the Legislature to forbid a woman from ending a pregnancy because the fetus is homosexual.
He said the bill looks into the future in case scientists find what he described as a "homosexual gene."

Now it seems that this Republican is being a bit of a trouble-maker here and is attempting to create a wedge issue. The assumptions being that if a homosexual gene is found, and tested for, that parents (ooops showed my bias there...mothers) may opt to abort. Which causes a conflict of gay-rights versus abortion-rights.

When there is no root to rights you can encounter some pretty strange scenarios.
