Good for Mr. Coyne

Andrew Coyne seems to be a touch cranky lately. Or at very least frustrated with the protectors of the status quo in Canada. First he took a crack at exposing the ridiculousness of the bashers of the Gomery Inquiry, now he challenges the institutional backers of the status quo on abortion.

He presents 6 barriers to discussion that should be torn down.

  1. Abortion is too divisive to discuss
  2. The status quo was decided upon through a democratic process
  3. The
current (non) law is what Canadians want
  4. The current (non) law is the only acceptable position
  5. Only the Conservatives disagree on the issue
  6. The issue is only about a women's "right to choose"

I have restated the six above differently than Mr. Coyne presented them but the point remains the same.

You have to hand it the Liberals, they are brilliant at casting their position (even if they don't agree with it) as the only acceptable position and they then rely on the institutional backers to do the dirty work.

This quashing of decent does not belong in a mature democracy. Thank you Mr. Coyne for trying to push the debate.
