That is the new term being applied to Coldplay and their copycat bands, Keane, Snow Patrol, Embrace, the Thirteen Senses and Athlete (cool, new bands to check out).
I think it has more to do with Chris Martin's falsetto, some interesting tunings and chord progressions, but if you want to call it 'glum rock' I am cool with that.
...Everything sounds like Coldplay now. No other sounds can be allowed...Very restrained, not too much row...This could be Embrace, Keane or Snow Patrol, Thirteen Senses sound like this as well I'm told
I like the sound of this;
...Heart 106.2 FM DJ Harriet Scott said Coldplay have helped return guitar music to the charts and that their new album is among "their finest"
Guitar rock? The Brits must have a different definition that North Americans. I consider guitar rock the hair-metal stuff of the '80's. Besides, Coldplay sound as just as much to do with the piano as the guitar. The guitar riff in "In My Place" is exactly blazing either. But if that means less Boy Bands and Sugar Pop than I am all for it.
