The Globe and Mail is reporting that Liberal MP David Kilgour is considering defecting to the Conservative Party. This would be a wise move for MP Kilgour because if there is an election in 2005 he will most likely lose his seat.
...The
Liberal party is seen as looking on the public trust as a vulture looks on a dying calf. Here we are, a G7 country, acting like a northern banana republic. What country is seen as more politically corrupt than us at the moment? Kilgour said, speaking from Ottawa.
...If you draw up a thing to make people want to vomit, this is it, Kilgour said about the details emerging from the sponsorship inquiry. I have no desire for people to throw me out on my ear.
Hmm, doesn't sound like someone who is thinking about. It sounds like someone who has made up his mind. With a comment like that would the Liberals want him anyway. The only question now is Independent or Conservative?
I am thinking that MP Pat O'Brien and MP Dan McTeague must be closely pondering their future as well.
Update: MP O'Brien is holding firm, for now.
...They're extremely serious allegations, the most serious that could be levelled at our party. But I think it's extremely important for Gomery to finish his work and his final report. There could be even more serious allegations coming but there needs to be corroborating evidence of what that one person is saying.
Update II: Actually, no he is not.
..."I have had in-depth discussions with senior elected people in the Conservative party in the last few days," O'Brien said today.
"The welcome mat is very much out for me to come to their party. I'm being encouraged, in fact, to do that.
"Three (Liberal) backbenchers have told me they've been approached by the Conservatives besides me . . . I'm sure there's more, frankly."
..."I have the option to sit as an independent . . . or I could just stay as a Liberal and run again that's becoming less likely, I think."
He can also be seen on this evening's edition of CBC Politics.
Update III: Robert Fife of CTV reports that the Conservatives will not accept MP David Kilgour. Considering he is a professional flip-flopper and his seat will be an easy win for the Conservatives this comes as no surprise.
