Last week Mike Brock linked to a Carleton research paper regarding blogs and it provided a ranking of the top Canadian Blogs. As was pointed out, this research paper's rankings are incredibly flawed. Seeing how easy it is to do flawed research I thought I would do some here (Note: I have discovered massive discrepancies between different counters - take these ranking with a huge grain of salt) Using the Truth Laid Bear Ecosystem rankings I have compiled the list below. Please note that not all bloggers use this system so I am missing several large ones (of the top of my head Shotgun, MP Solberg, etc.). If I have missed you (and you have more the 200 hits/day) please email me (greg dot staples at rogers dot com) and I will correct the list.
Update: it appears that Norman Spector that confused page views with visitors (easily done) so I have corrected the rankings. Back in front is Andrew Coyne.
Update II: The list is a hit! And people are (correctly) pointing out some of the more nonsensical elements if it (i.e. sitemeter vs. server-generated stats: which I am discovering is a HUGE problem) and exclusion of other sites. The second point is now corrected. As for the first - if you feel your stats are under-reported send me a report that shows your actual stats (i.e. prove it) and I will revise your ranking. Isn't open-source "science" of wonderful thing?
Update III: Andrew Coyne has passed Winds of Change on TTLB rankings. Sitemeter must be doing some pretty funking things with Mr. Coyne's statistics. In an apples to apples comparison he is higher though. Do I not have to rank him higher than Winds of Change. Any thoughts?
Update IV: Andrew Coyne suggest that Captain's Quarters should be on the list. Man! When did I become part of the CRTC gulag. If Bryan Adams is not Canadian because Mutt Lange is South African/British and they recorded in Britain, is Captain Ed Canadian because he has a high enough Canadian Content quota. Besides Minnesota is close enough, eh? (sing it with me, it's a small world after all...) I will give him the Honourary No. 1 in our hearts: Captain's Quarters: 21172
