Mr. Harper goes to Toronto

According to Opposition Leader Stephen Harper is under fire for this comment. (hat-tip NealeNews)

Because it's (Bill C-38) being passed with the support of the Bloc, I think it will lack legitimacy with most Canadians. The truth is most federalist MPs oppose this.

Considering that le Quebecois tend to support SSM more that the ROC the logic of this statement is flawed. But in my mind this statement is not about logic it is about two other things. Contrary to the wisdom pronounced daily in the media, the Conservatives believe they have a winning issue in supporting the traditional definition of marriage. Time will tell if this is wise but considering Mr. Harper has picked this hill to die on it is my guess that they must have some serious polling numbers to back this up. You don't believe me? Stephen Harper was in Toronto this weekend but instead of making the obligatory appearance at the Gay Pride parade he gave a speech at a Muslim convention in Mississauga. The total attendance for the weekend conference was 35,000 (although not all Canadian).

The other factor coming into play is the so-called Conservative/Bloc alliance. This has been getting traction in Ontario and the Liberal/Bloc deal gave the Conservatives an opportunity to cleave this connection. It will probably just take one more public spat between Misters Harper and Duceppe for this myth to be permanently erased.
