There is a new Strategic Council which shows that Canadians want both PM Paul Martin and Opposition Leader Stephen Harper replaced.
Here is how CFRA 580 reports on the poll.
...A Strategic Counsel survey suggests 52 per cent of respondents believe the Prime Minister should be replaced as leader of the federal Liberal Party.
59 per cent say the Conservatives need to dump Harper and find a new leader.
The survey suggests, among Liberal supporters, only 20 per cent believe Martin should step down and make way for a new leader.
Among Conservatives, 37 per cent said Harper should go.
Obviously bad news for both leaders. Probably worse for MP Harper than PM Martin but it is extermely significant that a majority of Canadians want PM Martin replaced. However the Globe and Mail decides to use these poll to write yet another attack piece on MP Harper and bury the Liberal bad news at the bottom of the article. Check out this headline.
"Majority want Harper replaced, poll shows". I love the secondary byline. "Martin also suffers popularity problems". Hello! A majority want Martin replaced as well. Why is one a screaming headline and the other is "popularity problems".
Also look at this from the same Globe
and Mail article.
Improved Stayed the same Gotten worse
Jack Layton 32 53 15
Gilles Deceppe 17 66 17
Paul Martin 15 43 42
Stephen Harper 14 45 41
In one year since being elected 42% of Canadians opinion of PM Martin has worsened. 52% of Canadians polled want him replaced. You the know, the Prime Minister. The guy whosets the direction of the government. Appoints Cabinet Ministers. Appoints Supreme Court Justices. Appoints the heads of Crown Corporations. Sets our Foreign Policy. But the Globe and Mail thinks it is more important that the Opposition Leader's numbers are low. Talk about priorities!
