...When Martin eventually gave Parrish the boot, it sent a signal that he was a Liberal who might actually get it and that he was going to live up to his election promise that his party really did want to address the causes of western alienation.
Of course, a lot of things have changed since then. Martin, despite his moral postulating, showed he really is just a Liberal at heart and is operating by his party's one and only apparent philosophical plank.
And that's to stay in power, no matter what.
Martin threw his reputation as a fiscal hawk to the wind when he blew up his budget to accommodate NDP Leader Jack Layton's socialist agenda. He got his budget through Parliament and his minority government survived to fight another day.
But at what cost to his reputation and credibility?
