Ayn Rand for tots

That is how Paul Cantor, Author, Gilligan Unbound: Pop Culture in the Age of Globalization described The Incredibles in his speech at the CATO Institute entitled Libertarianism in Contemporary Culture.

I will (somewhat) have to take Mr. Cantor's word for it. I am only 200 pages into Atlas Shrugged. I am having a hard time getting into it. Maybe I have my grandfathers blood. He absolutely refused to read fiction. I have no such opposition but I have found non-fiction to be more interesting of late. I did finish the Stephen Harper biography and I did find it very interesting. As others have mentioned it is as much a history lesson as a biography but that it ok with me. As an Ontarian I had no idea that Preston Manning intended the Reform Party to be non-partisan. I just assumed that it was always a right-wing thing. Well it ended up that way so it may be splitting hairs but it did provide something new for me.

Anyways, back to Libertarianism. The libertarian right and progressive left are in a bit of a tizzy over the arrest of BC marijuana Party leader Marc Emery. I am someone is a Libertarian streak but my line is drawn with drugs (and abortion). I guess you could say that I am a "rule-of-law" Libertarian but I can't see myself toking up if it were legal. Maybe it is the social-conservative streak coming through, but that has come later in life and doesn't explain why I won't touch the stuff. Maybe I am a right-and-wrong conservative and drugs just seem wrong to me. Long story short, I don't have much sympathy for Mr. Emery but Greg at Sinister Thoughts does make a point, why are we arresting people for the US DEA?

Update: I read more at the CATO institute and apparently there are pro-life libertarians and pro-choice libertarians, so maybe there is more room than I thought. The Canadian Libertarian Party is distinctly pro-choice though. One other disagreement found though. On Foreign Policy Libertarians believe that military should be used only for defense. I have a hard time thinking that military intervention should be disallowed in say, Sudan. Or in 1939 Germany for that matter.
