Charley Finley strikes again

Further to my post yesterday Adam Foote has signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets for 3 years at $4.5M/year. This is a defenceman who was touted as a max. player. Remember, max. money is ~$7.4M/year. Suffice it to say that $4.5M is hardly max money. With so many good players on the market their relative values have decreased. It will be very interesting to see what Scott Neidermeyer will sign for.

By the way, I think the Leafs made the right decision to not sign Gary Roberts and Joe Neiuwendyk for two years at $2.25/year. How can you give two year deals to 40 year olds? The Leafs need to get younger (and cheaper) and as much as it will hurt to lose these players it was right to let them go. They must sign a winger for Sundin though.

Update: Hatcher to Philly? Are the floodgates opening?

Update II: This page from Sportsnet will come in very convenient over the next couple of weeks. Bobby Holik for $4.25/year. Derian Hatcher for $3.5/year. My point continues to be proven. Will anyone get max money?

Update III: Martin Gelinas for Tony Amonte. That's a good exchange for the Calgary Flames. The new era indeed! The Flames would have never had a chance at an Amonte previously. Hello Leafs, in case you weren't aware the free agency period has begun. To be fair, they may have Jason Allison pretty soon.
