According to the Globe and Mail the Prime Minister called Premier Klein and asked him to have the other Premiers temper their comments on Michaelle Jean. Prime Minister also called Stephen Harper. I think Premier Bernard Lord captures the situation perfectly though.
..."The prime minister called Premier Klein to reassure us, but I don't think it's just a question of reassuring 13 premiers. It's a question of reassuring 30 million Canadians," said the francophone Mr. Lord.
"She is experienced, she's very bright, she understands media and she understands public opinion," said Mr. Lord. "A lot of people outside Quebec don't know Mme. Jean very well and this is their introduction.
"I'm sure Canadians across this country (who) believe in Canada would agree the Governor General be a strong Canadian."
And if she voted for separation she should be disqualified from the post. It is time for her to make a clear statement on this.
Update: Check this story out from Rosemary Thompson of CTV. Her conclusion rings true:
...For a former broadcaster Michealle Jean's silence seems strange. Both she and her husband are leaving it to others to speculate where their true loyalties lie, to Canada or to Quebec.
