everything looks like a nail. When the primary goal of Canadian government is to keep Quebec in the fold everything is judged through this lens.
It sucks. It really does. Every issue in the country comes down to this. I am really tired of it. You can't speak out against the lack of vetting on the G-G because that is playing into the hands of the separatist. You cannot bring down a corrupt government because that would play into the hands of Quebec separatists (read David Frum today). You cannot follow Quebec's french only policy with a similar english policy in english speaking provinces beacause that would play into the hand of Quebec separatists. You cannot question the status quo in this country because that would play into the hands of Quebec separatists.
Is there anything other than actual separation that will end this madness?
Update: It seems that this frustration can cross the political divide. The Calgary Grit has a much more articulate post on the same subject.
...I've been as critical of the separatist cause in Quebec as anyone but it's ridiculous to suggest that you can't question the government because it might help the separatists. That bears an eerie similarity to the Republican Party's masterful use of the "you're with us, or you're with the terrorists" line over the past few years.
