MP Solberg has an interesting fisking of MP Dan McTeague.
...Look at it another way Dan. If the government can drive down prices for gas without affecting the supply then why limit government intervention to gasoline? Why not tell those grocery stores that they can't charge more than a dollar a pound for cherries, and the video store that they can't charge more than a buck for rentals and house prices should be capped at, say, $20,000.
Come on Dan, if you'ver got the magic socialist bullet then use it man.
Hey Monte, don't give them any more ideas on growing the Federal Government!
Other than a potential unity crisis over the "redistribution of wealth" higher oil prices could have some great long-term benefits. Instead of guilting people to drive smaller cars people will follow the "invisible hand" and will switch due to their own self interest. You want less dependence on foreign oil, $80 a barrel oil sure motivates investment into alternative energy sources. Furthermore, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia and even Saskatchewan could ride oil prices to "have status".
Besides, if the Liberals were really interested in lowering the price at the pump they could just reduce the taxes on gasoline. Like that would ever happen!
