Take me to a place I've never been

So a quick change of plans had me diverted from Sudbury to North Bay earlier this afternoon. The disruption in my schedule did come with one advantage however - I took Hwy 64 from just south of Sudbury through Noelville, Lavigne and Sturgeon Falls to North Bay. I can't think of any other reason why I would have ever been on this road but it was certainly scenic enough to make it worth my while. Especially the lakes outside of Noelville. Beautiful country.

That being said, it cost me $76 to fill my tank in Lavigne. The tiny gas station was still in full gouge mode charging $1.39/L. Not that out of line with the rest of the area though. I guess there is not enough competition in the area because gas was finally under a buck a litre when I left KW this morning.

It made me wonder if PM Martin was booking a trip to the Nippising Region to live up to his promise of making sure the price of gas came down in step with the price of oil. Or was that just rhetoric?

Considering that Environment Minister Stephane Dion said high gas prices are actually good for Canada in the medium and long term and "We have to get used to changing our way of life...We consume way too much gas. If all of humanity had the same consumption levels as we do, it would take five planets instead of one in order to maintain the planet's capacity for reproduction." Calgary Herald, August 24, 2005

One wonders if that is truly the case. Or it at least explains why the Liberals would rather not take away the deficit reduction premium even though there is not deficit and are happy to tax the tax on gas. I guess we should Minister Dion to head up to Lavigne and fill his tank.
