I can understand why CPC Leader Harper wants a fall election but if he wants the NDP on board I'm afraid it's just not going to happen.
..."I don't accept the government's view that only they can pick the subject and the timing of any vote on whether they stay in office," Mr. Harper said.
"If the NDP
came to the conclusion, along with all of the other opposition parties, that they couldn't support the government, I believe there are means to express that in the first week of November."
When asked how the Tories could force an election before the scheduled opposition days, Conservative House Leader Jay Hill said his party, the Bloc Québécois and the NDP could bring the House of Commons to a halt.
"I'm sure if all three parties wanted to resort to disruptive tactics and shut the House down, basically bring business to a standstill to show that we're not willing to accept the government's timetable in allowing us our opposition days, we could quickly bring Parliament to a standstill."
But Mr. Harper said the New Democrats would have to act quickly.
"If the NDP wants to cease supporting the government, they'll have to do that in the first week of November," he said. "After the first week of November, we'd be talking about a Christmas election and nobody considers that a realistic possibility."
The NDP seems committed to trying to gain more consesions out of the Liberals - and why wouldn't they. I doubt there is anything more for them to gain but their attempts will effectively run out the clock. I don't see how it works to the NDP to play to the Liberals time frame but that is the course they are going down. They only way this changes is by an agressive reaction from the Canadian public to the Gomery Report. Yeah, I don't think so either.
