The Christian Comeback

Allan Gregg has a really good article by this name on his website.

In it he points to a couple of things that not enough people recognize. Contrary to what you may have seen, Churches are not empty. I attend Mass every Sunday and to do so I have visited many different parishes (primarily in Ontario). You know what, they're almost always packed. Especially my parish in Cambridge. Four masses every weekend. All very well attended.

The other thing Christian does not equal right-wing. This talk of the "religious-right" is pretty ridiculous. Especially in the Canadian context. There are very religious people in all political parties. Further, there is nothing inherently right-wing about my faith - Christianity (of the Roman Catholic variety). It is issue based. How abortion fits on a left-to-right political spectrum is beyond me. You can make a similar argument for same-sex marriage. Does loving your neighbour fall anywhere on a political spectrum? Helping the poor is a pretty important
left-wing value (although I would argue not exclusive to the left) - does that make Jesus Christ a New Democrat?

I am just saying we need to get past our preconceived notions...or that is what Allan Gregg is saying. Read the whole thing (pdf)
