Even the NDP's Layton, having been at the forefront of the push for a January election, will need to improve the party's seat count and popular vote to be assured job security.
"I can see very few scenarios where we don't see at least one of the major parties changing leaders - and possibly both," said Faron Ellis, a longtime researcher of Canada's conservative movement at Lethbridge Community College.
That suggests that even a repeat of 2004's election result - a common gripe for voters who can't understand the point of going back to the polls - could significantly rearrange the federal political scene.
I agree with Faron Ellis on this one. We will see at least one, if not two, federal parties change their leaders. Which ones? Only time will tell.
