So it is indeed a policy announcement a day (apparently until a Christmas break) even on the weekends. Today it is Law & Order.
The plan includes:
- including mandatory minimum sentences for the most serious drug crimes
- A ban on conditional sentencing (house arrest) for serious drug crimes
- Higher fines for drug dealers and producers, based on the street value of drugs
- Not proceeding with decriminalization of marijuana
- Making the precursor chemical ingredients of crystal meth, such as pseudoephedrine, harder to get
- A drug prevention strategy focused on youth
This is yet another issue that will play well in the key suburban ridings.
Update: The headline almost encaspulates the entire first week. Harper chooses momentum-building while Martin opts for campaign pacing. The only difference I would suggest is that Harpers momentum-building sets the pace for the campaign.
...For the fourth consecutive day, Harper rolled out a key plank in his platform, this time highlighting the drug-control section of the party's criminal justice agenda with promises of mandatory prison sentences, stiffer fines and an end of conditional sentences.
