Laying a trap

I think Greg Weston is bang on (no pun intended)

Paul Martin's plan to fight gang violence by banning all handguns that are essentially already banned certainly won't stop shoot-outs in the streets of our cities, but the move does set a nasty political trap to ambush the Conservatives in the current election campaign.

...Then came the bait to draw out Conservative fury.
"Guns kill people," Martin said, clearly goading the Tories to trot out the old anti-gun control slogan: "Guns don't kill; people do."

The Liberals are laying in wait - hoping that a high profile, former Reform member, comes out hard against the hand gun ban. All I can say to such people is be careful. This is not policy, this is politics.

I think the first spin from the Conservatives is correct. This is a non-announcement. The Liberals have banned banned weapons. If the Liberals ask if you support the ban say that we've had a ban since 1934 and leave it at that.
