History repeating?

In his column today Greg Weston reminds us of one of the strangest events in Canadian politics. During the 1998 election campaign the Chretien-wing of the Liberal Party tried to oust John Turner. Not to suggest an ouster but,

...It is also causing some of us with long memories and suspicious minds to wonder if the campaign isn't being sabotaged by old foes in the Liberal party itself.
Since the election began, three prominent Chretien-era Liberals have offered us tips on possible stories which, if true, would have damaged the Grits' chance of re-election. (None of the leads have yet panned out.)
Maybe it is nothing more than spiteful Chretienites who feel they were run out of the party by the Martinis. My bet is a play for power.
It also doesn't take a political genius to figure out if the Conservatives win this election, Martin will be toast, and the old Chretien crowd will get a chance to regain control of the Liberal party in a leadership contest. If the Conservatives win only a minority, the Chretien leftovers could be running for government again in no time.
