Or why not a health care election?

Man, this is getting good. Buckle your seatbelts.

Update: Speaking of healthcare, check out this article. Again, this could get fun.

Martin Cauchon has indicated that if he seeks the Liberal leadership he won't hesitate to slay some of his party's sacred cows.

...Cauchon said it's time to explore the demographic implications of Canada's fast-aging population on public health care.

"But talking about changes to health care is still a great Canadian taboo," Cauchon said in a printed copy of his speech.

"The nature of democracy is to allow discussion and debate. To reject the simple idea of exploring alternatives is unhealthy for the future of health care in this country."

Cauchon avoided specifics and did not make any references to private health services or to re-opening the Canada Health Act.

He said any changes to the system must respect the chief principle of medicare - that people should not be denied treatment if they can't afford it.

As opposed to the current system, where they are denied treatment whether they can afford it or not.

Even a stupid socialist like me knows you don’t tempt fate. As an aside, depending on the BQ for support while you are stripping funding from Quebec’s daycare system may not be a smart bet.

Good for Cauchon. But I wouldn’t get my hopes up. Liberals have effectively trashed debate in this country and it’s typical of them to destroy an institution before promising to build it back up and purport themselves to be saviours.

MarkC:

Wow! It seems like we are in Narnia. The ice is starting to break up. The news is full of reasonably serious debate over innovation in healthcare, child care, supreme court appointments, the senate, you name it. Whether you love Harper or hate him, you have to be glad that, after so many years, Liberal pieties can finally be openly questioned and debated.

Don’t you worry MarkC, soon the Media and the Liberals will step up to crush debate and we’ll go back to putting our national heads up our national asses.

OT,

But here’s an interesting stat about immigration that we need to find other ways to get closer to replacement levels.

Justzumgai:

Yes, we’re certainly in a pickle. We have to find other ways to get closer to replacement levels … or the welfare state is doomed.

If you can name a single industry in Canada which is growing and thriving AND which needs tens of thousands of new workers every year in order to meet the demand for its products, then I will accept that Canada “needs” an immigration rate which is something like three times higher than any other nation on earth. The welfare industry doesn’t count.
