Fair is fair

Considering the extensive investigation that Ethics Commissioner Shapiro conducted on PM Martin and MP Stronach and their infamous flour crossing it makes sense that he do the same for PM Harper and MP Emerson.

Sorry. What was that? You mean he did not investigate Stronach/Martin. Hmmmm.

Colin:

Five bucks says he finds something improper about it.

I wonder how hard it is for Harper to summarily dismiss Shapiro? Anybody know?

chris c:

Can’t be done by the PM but only by parliament.

bks:

I think he lost all credibility when he cleared Judy Sgro!

Dave Ruddell:

Global was just reporting that no MP actually formally requested an investigation into Belinda’s crossing. IF that’s true, then the Tories at the time were just stupid for not asking for one.

p-air:

Do you suppose that Harper will lose any sleep over this? It will probably take Shapiro 15 months to issue his findings. And since he is incapable of making a hard decision, the Report will be filled with things that are ‘troubling’ but nothing that actually violates whatever rules or guidelines Shapiro will find don’t actually exist.

I asked this question during the election and it only got a brief response from Paul Wells via email.

Has Shapiro launched an investigation into the alleged Income Trust scandal?

If not, why? Call me naive, but is there any protocol to what complaints are investigated and what is not?

I can’t make any sense of this stuff.

Paul O:

Tim Powers, appearing on “Mike Duffy Live” for a regular segment (“He Said: She Said”), pointed out that Shapiro told Jason Kenney that the Ethics Commissioner couldn’t investigate anyone between Parliaments (i.e. from dissolution until the new House sits), and that’s why he couldn’t investigate Volpe’s real estate dealings.

Hey Obeda,

Tell Tim the next time you see him at Darcys that he’s needs to straighten his specs.

As my old man says, he must have sat on them during the last bender.

That is, if you still go to Mcgees on friday. ;-)

Gritpatriot:

HArper and the CPC complained it was unethical that Stronach crossed the floor. Is it any surprise that a CPC complaint has been resurrected now that the shoe is on the other foot? Will John Reynolds make another law socity complaint, like he did last time too?

You guys set such a terrible tone in Parliament. It should not surprise you that the CPC will face the very tactics they invented.

BTW, is it unethical for a leader to promise one thing (ie. senate elections) and then do the opposite once elected (appoint Fortier)? Where are the CPC ethicists on that stinker?

Paul O:

My attendance at Darcy’s is less regular these days than it once was. I should be through there in two weeks, though, ready to add an apostrophe to my surname for the day. (St. Patty’s Day, for those who need a calendar.)

Still, I don’t think Tim P would have any reason to know who I am.

My bad Paul. I thought you met Tim one night back when we all lived at Darcys in 2000.

I hear things have chnged since then, espcially Nortel’s stock.lol

Paul O:

Scott: no worries. And there are plenty of folks who I’ve met through the years, but the meeting doesn’t necessarily register.

Also: above, where I mentioned “Volpe”, I meant “Valeri”. My apologies for any confusion.

Finally, I might ask those requesting this investigation: just what vote in the House do they suspect Emerson changed?

Alberta Girl:

Geez Gritpatriot - I am really getting tired of reading the SAME old crap on every blog I go onto - You have made your point (well actually you haven’t but maybe if I tell you that you did - you will go away!)

Binford:

New ethics commissioner: Allan Cutler.

“New ethics commissioner: Allan Cutler.”

Only if a parliamentary committee agrees. Appointing someone else with no input from the opposition parties will not fix the problem.
