In a lot of respects my attention to politics has reflected a shift from my attention to sports. From TSN to CPAC. From FAN 590 to Talk Radio.
And this is just an example of why.
In what could only be seen as a crushing blow, Premier Ralph Klein received just 55 per cent support early Saturday in his bid to retain the leadership of Alberta's Conservative party. There had been much speculation in recent days as to what numbers Klein needed to hold onto the helm of Canada's most prosperous province, but as the vote results trickled in, many Tory officials looked positively ashen.
Marisa Etmanski, Klein's official spokeswoman, struggled to hold back tears.
"He was disappointed," she said. "He was shocked and, I daresay, a little hurt."
Now that is Real Life, Real Drama, Real TV - political theatre at its' finest.
It reminds me of the political adage that sometimes doing nothing is the best descision. Remember the special interests who demanded that PM Harper stare down Premier Klien over his musings on health care reform? Well, the PC Party of Alberta has done the dirty work and PM Harper is off the hook. Sometimes being lucky is better than being good. And after another sucessful forray into foreign affairs it could be that PM Harper is both lucky and good.
Update: Summer's Daydreams was in attendance for the vote and not happy.
