Belinda Stronach is expected to announce later today that she will not enter the race for the federal Liberal leadership.Stronach has scheduled a news conference shortly to discuss the federal Liberal leadership race.
CTV's Ottawa bureau chief Robert Fife said everyone had been expecting Stronach to make a bid to replace former Prime Minister Paul Martin.
"In fact, she would have probably had a fairly good showing. But family and friends say that she felt that her French wasn't good enough," Fife told CTV Newsnet.
So the next pool is to pick her retirement date.

And it’s official.
I guess we’ll have to get our laughs from Ashley McIssac.

The ostensible reason she gave is interesting—there are a lot of excuses she could have made, but she chose the one that was a very legitimate criticism of her own party.

Belinda is right. The delegated convention is an anachronistic method to select a leader, developed in an era before telecommunications and computers. It’s about as democratic as the cardinals picking the pope. She knew she would lose since her strength is bringing outsiders into the party, and even with the new Liberal membership rules she would have a difficult time locking up delegates.
On the other hand, her major weakness is putting together a cogent thought in either official language. Didn’t prevent Chretien from winning, but anyway…

That stuff about not going anywhere, not going away — it sounds an awful lot like what she said in her speech when she was pledging her support to Harper…
I’m also disappointed. I’d have enjoyed watching her run…
