You don't say

An embarrassing Liberal spending program that has run away costs hidden from the public eye?

Conservative sources said the report will show the Liberals failed to clearly identify those costs in mandatory reports on government spending, instead slotting the increased price under nondescript headings such as "administration" that would not be easily detected.

Where have I heard that before?

The Tories would never have thought to be so mean to the Liberals if it hadn’t been for that agent provocateur American demon.

Normally they get along so well. Bygones, etc.

The Yank is clearly behind Sheila Fraser’s investigation, too.

Those bastards are everywhere.

Greg:

I just find the coincidence (and I am sure it is a coincidence, right?) of Luntz’s talk about digging up dirt last week and the law suits etc. this week, just too delicious to let go. I swear, Harper has the political timing of a three year old. He couldn’t wait for a couple of weeks so that the connection between the two events couldn’t be made as easily. Oh no, not super brain, Stephen Harper.

Diana:

I just read an interview with Mr. Luntz. He said the Canadian Conservatives had told him that they couldn’t get much of a break in the media. He said he didn’t think it could be as bad as they said until he returned to Washington and started reading stories about “what he supposedly said” in his address at Civitis. He was flabbergasted. He denies every saying such things as “digging up dirt” and the rest of the so-called factual report which was obtained by a reporter who stood outside the door and eavesdropped was totally bogus, mis-quotes, clearly invented para-phrases.

He went on to say that there are such laws about such media fabrications in the United States and this reporter could not have gotten away with her story there without being sued; having to post a retraction and probably being sanctioned in other ways.

This was not an “editorial” or “opinion” piece. This reporter pretended it was a factual story of what he said.

What laws do we have for media ethics in Canada?

JasperPants:

I recall hearing on a French news documentary that the cost of the registry was $2 billion.

Let’s have an over/under contest.

I bet the cost is over 2B…

Mr Ed:

Let’s take it one step further then a bet on 2 billion + or - … lets look at how many deaths in the last 12 years might have been prevented if money for the registry had been put into the Police, Prison, and an actual followup system to the Imigration deportation system… How many felons committed gun crimes resulting in deaths in the last 10-12 years that should have never been on the street or even in our country… Even one death being prevented would have been worth the 2 Billion waisted on the long gun registry to the familys of anyone killed in a hand gun crime in the last decade…

JasperPants:

Your right Mr Ed. If the cost is anywhere near 2B, even the True Believers on the Left will have a hard time justifiying the cost as money well spent.

The Registry will die with a whimper.

MrEd:

the stupid part is hearing people in Toronto complain about weapons coming into Canada from the States when they have no need to look any further then their own military and law enforcement. If they took the time to read the press releases where it’s been reported literally hundreds of hand guns have gone missing or been lost in transit between facilities…

MrEd:

While I’m on a rant….where did our money we donated over a year ago and the Liberals matched with our tax dollars for Tsunamii relief ever end up…??? Why isn’t the MSM reporting on that I wonder???

potato:

“Why isn’t the MSM reporting on that I wonder???”

MrEd, there are a thousand unanswered questions regarding the former Liberal government. But, there’s a war going on (Harper,Conservatives/MSM). It’s unreasonable to expect coverage of such trivial matters when the troops are needed on the frontlines.

Greg:

Remember that coincidence I was talking about. Maybe I spoke too soon.

Anybody call a plumber? There seems to be a leaker in the government.

MrEd:

I remember prior to any investigation being launched that the numbers being batted around were close to 2 billion over 12+ years on various blogs… about 160-180 million a year which is close to 140-160 million over budget annually… Those Blog numbers had to come from somewhere
