That's going to leave a mark. A really big one for the Liberals and a bruise for the Conservatives. It is an interesting question though - will Jack Layton last longer than PM Harper. Even though I don't see PM Harper going anywhere for a while I still agree that Mr. Layton could last longer.

Grinnin Jack is no good as anything but a snake oil salesman, last I heard those positions were filled with lieberals, so the usless little jerk may as well stay among his own kind.

If Layton and the NDP grow stronger, and the Conservatives continue in gaining the popular trust, all I can see is the more populist blue-Liberal moving to the CPC while the smaller and more extreme group of leftist Liberals move to the NDP.
Yes, Layton will gain power, but in the same way the Reform/Alliance parties gained power during the 90’s. Either the Liberals or the NDP will have more seats, but it will guarantee a Conservative majority because they will further split the vote.
Either way, I have a strong feeling that the next election will ensure a CPC majority.

He’s forgetting something important in that article - the Conservatives aren’t changing their identity, they’re defining it.
The Liberals have been trying to paint the right as evil and scary for over a decade. Harper has been trying to define the CPC as centre-right, and been succeeding at it. That’s not going to be a weakness going into the next election.

Layton can define Dippers and Libs from his rubber room of Toronto which he tells us are the “People”. ie. the “people” want this or that. Great way to implode two parties at once.

That was a good column. For a little context, I believe Brady Irwin is the son of former Chretienite Ron Irwin. That doesn’t invalidate his observations, but it is important to know where he is coming from.
The column is a little shakey with respect to Harper. To be sure, Harper is adapting his politics to the exigencies of power. But that does not mean he is letting others define him. A minority government obviously constrains him, but there is still a consistency to his policies and approach.

Last….? You mean “Persist” don’t you? Like toe nail fungus, warts or venereal disease.
