Afghan Mission Debate

CTV's Robert Fife is reporting that the NDP, BQ and the majority of the Liberals will vote against extending the mission. The vote looks like it will be very tight.

Greg:

In the end what does it matter? The vote is merely symbolic. Harper seems to be getting his wish. He is polarizing the country. How nice for us.

If a vote does not matter why have the NDP pushed for one?

Greg:

They have bought into Harper’s B.S.

Greg,

On my blog I have asked that ALL blogs post their support of the afghan mission to send a message to our MP’s…. sure it won’t do much but I’m hoping this catches on. Blogopshere can usually make some press. Your blog is fantastic and I know it has some pull.

Oh ya, cause the Liberal’s and NDP’s over the top rhetoric have not in any way polarized the country. its all Stephen’s fault don’t ya know.

“They have bought into Harper’s B.S.”. You must be so proud. If they are that much under PM Harper’s secret powers they are useless as a political party.

Greg:

Nope, not proud at all. Just really depressed.

Greg:

The question is, what does Harper do if he loses the vote?

That is the question of the day. I suspect it becomes an issue in this falls election ;)

JasperPants:

This topic kinda suck up on me… forgive my ignorance, is this vote a Confidence vote?

JasperPants

If he loses the vote, the troops have got to come home in February 2007, right?

That kills the mission. (I know, Parliament has no power to do that, it’s all on cabinet. But really, you can’t ignore a vote like that.)

nomdenet:

Harper hasn’t polarized the country. The country has been severely polarized since the fall of the Berlin Wall and again by 9/11. We have dissenting views in Canada about how to proceed in a global economy threatened by terrorists.

There is an enormous gap in the philosophy of a Liberal/NDPer and a Conservative. Those worldviews are about to be openly debated in Canada as they have been over the last few years between the Democrats and Republicans. The US is in a constant state of revolution. It’s called democracy.

At last we’ll get debate and dissent in Parliament which will help us frame our arguments here and with our friends and relatives with whom we dissent. We are on the threshold of re-inventing our country and becoming a nation again instead of an adolescent US dependant.

Who are these idiots who think Harper has polarized the country. The man’s been in office for three months! I’m so sick of people talking about how he’s singlehandledly plunged the country into the stone-age. Do people read anymore?

Greg:

Who are these idiots who think Harper has polarized the country.

The irony of that statement made me laugh. Thanks.

Sinister Greg: weren’t the NDP calling for a vote on our Afghanistan mission before the Conservatives won power? How exactly can you blame “Harper’s B.S.” for their stance?

Dr. Strangelove:

It’s all academic now. Bill Graham just did one of his best feigning outrage on the CBC a few moments ago. He’s angered and furious over how this process has been thrust upon the house blah blah. But our party will vote individually according to there personal judgement.

It sounds more like their caucus meeting was more to strategize how to apportion just enough votes to pass the motion. Pure spec on my part but that’s what it sounds like.

Greg:

I want to thank Harper for one thing. He has once again shown how feckless the Liberals are. They are without feck.

Greg:

IH. The NDP is in another place (cloud cuckooland?). They think that we should have real debates with real exchanges of ideas leading to some kind of consensus. They have to stop calling for debates because that is not how Harper sees debates. He sees debates as ways to bully the opposition with attack lines imported from the U.S. and votes as future fodder for attack ads (I can see it all now. A picture of Layton looking like he has hemroids with a voice over “Jack Layton hates Canada. Jack Layton voted against our boys in Afghanistan”). I think it is better for the NDP just to tell Harper to rule the country and take responsibility for the decisions he makes. Leave the voting to areas of legislation.

By the way, I think we should be in Afghanistan and I disagree with leaving (though I understand why the NDP is voting against this motion).

Fergy:

Jasperpants et al: THIS IS A NON-BINDING VOTE!!! This changes the optics. Think about it. The Libs can vote against it, and force Harper to Get them to stay anyway, bad news!!.

Robert tilley:

Once the NDP and Liberals vote NO tonight and send the message to our troops that the Taliban misogenyists have won and Canada will cut-n-run , because of this there will be very few soldiers wanting to be the “Last person killed in Afghanistan” .

Plus , the Pro-Taliban Afganis in Toronto will be very happy to see females being put back in their place as baby-machines and sex slaves as Muhammed did.

Greg:

I suspect Robert is a Liberal plant. No conservative would be that stupid.

lrC:

The NDP is in another place (cloud cuckooland?). They think that we should have real debates with real exchanges of ideas leading to some kind of consensus.

Maybe when they decide to plead for a debate, they should (beforehand, or, what the heck, during the pleading process) prepare themselves for it.
