Do you have to be slightly mad to display such idiotic anti-Americanism or does anti-Americanism cause this display of idiocy? Either way watch the At Issue Panel from CBC National last night (one day only), go to the 28:27 mark and listen to Michael Byers of the University of British Columbia.
...Another thing to remember is there is a lot of space between Toronto and the rest of the country and quite frankly, I hate to say this Peter, but if there was a flash and a bang right now and Chantal and I were talking to two blank screens it wouldn't be the end of the world in the rest of Canada. It would be unfortunate, we'd be very worried but there is the simple fact that this is a big and diverse country. And a final point to mention is that in Canada, across the board, we have a very internationalized population, one that's had a great deal of experience with trauma in other parts of the world. It takes more to shake us than it might have taken to shaken the Americans in September 2001.
What-f'ing-ever.

Agree. Another arrogant, Canadian Prof who spews self-righteous superiority over Americans. Andrew Coyne appropriately jumped on him.
Also, on the panel, Chantel is a necessary read of Quebec. But she is a left wing, pacifist and separatist.
Greg, your link is easy to launch and easy to get to the 28 minute mark. That was a worthwhile panel to see, glad I didn’t have to turn on the TV to see it, I’d encourage more of these kinds of links. Thanks.

I have never regarded Chantal Hebert as either left wing or separatist. From my read of things she was very much in favour of Meech Lake. I don’t here support for the BQ from her and definately not Liberal support. If anything I would peg her as someone who supported the Quebec wing of the former Mulroney coalition. That may or may not leave her without a home right now.
That being said I don’t really care. I find her to be a very well thought and well spoken colunnist/panelist and am happy to read/here what she says.
But that is my bias. I don’t care what ideology someone comes from as long as there expressions are well thought out and well presented.

nomdenet,
Your observation of Hebert is like a wrench into the gears. I find your commentary to be among the most well constructed of any; thus, I’ a wee bit thrown for a loop here. I’ve always found her to be reasonably balanced. Mind you, I wouldn’t necessarily classify myself as a completely dedicated reader of her columns. I was once told (whether true or not) that she is Franco-Ontarian, not a Quebecer. Nevertheless, could you please elaborate or justify your position?

Do you have flunk out of reality to become a University Prof?
Yeah… it would take more to shake us. I hate to say it, but will find out someday. And I hope somebody puts the presses to this tool’s thumbs when that day comes to see him ball like a baby before the first turn.
It’s always easier to throw insults from the cheap seats.

…that should have said
“do you have TO flunk”
and
“but WE will find out”…

As I said Greg “she is a necessary read”.
Dr Strangelove, I believe she lulls us into being complacent about her separatist leanings. We tend to like her the way we did Levesque’s shrug.
Also, Quebec is pacifist, because it lives in an even more protected bubble than the ROC. They just don’t see beyond their borders, but that is changing.
But, maybe I’m wrong about Chantel, it wouldn’t be my first mistake. I’ll pay more attention to her. Actually I hope I’m wrong about her.

Well, Ms. Hebert was kind enough to remind the good professor of the FLQ crisis. You know, the one when we declared frickin MARTIAL LAW.

nomdenet,
you’re way off base. Chantal Hebbert is one of the best journalists in the country.

I agree that Chantal Hebbert is one of the few really good journalists in this country.
However, I do think that part of the problem with the At Issue panel is the moderator….Peter Mansbridge.
I’ve decided to label the CBC as the Cuckoo Broadcasting Corp.

We need to have some type of web site to monitor these left-wing professors and hold their vile opinions up for public scrutiny. Something like Campus-Watch.org in the States.

I wish I could moderate the Bloggers Hotstove as well as Peter Mansbridge does the At Issue Panel. Seriously, the man is a pro.

I guess in order to fair and balanced you have to have both the Left of Centre and the Left of Sanity.
This kind of shit is so common from Campus phoneys…..you good professor just doesn’t know how full of shit he is.
Typical.

What an ill-thought suggestion that was. I know that a lot of Canadians have a bit of an anti-Toronto bias and all, but let’s get real here. He’s talking about an attack on a Canadian city and he thinks that the rest of the country would just go on like nothing happened? Gimme a break!
