Being a Volpeholic I am thirlled to see my man Joe is in the lead.
...Campaign manager Jim Karygiannis said Volpe has recruited 35,000 to 37,000 new members, a number he said should put Volpe "pretty well in the lead"
(I will let you follow the link to finish the sentence)
Whatever the numbers actually are the Liberals are indeed finding it harder to recruit members than in the past. I am curious to learn what the actual number are.

Really!? I sincerely offer my congratulations to him if this is true and all my best to him for grabbing the brass ring in December. He is absolutely the best example of what the liberal party is, who better to lead them? ;-)

at times, i have read political staples and thought to myself, ” this is a reasonable conservative blog”. imagine my surprise when i discover how worried the rank and file truly are when they suggest volpe has any chance of winning the leadership. however, his influence will matter further on down the road. most canadians will never know that he was ever a candidate for the LPC when they elect their next (liberal) government.

You wish :-)
My guess is that most of those new members are concentrated in the 40-50 Toronto area ridings.
Volpe’s strategy has always been to be some sort of KingMaker in Dec. If these tallies are correct, he could very well play that role.

Wonder if any of the new ‘members’ are old enough to vote? How many donated their allowances to his campaign? Serously though I do hope Volpe wins, that would virtually guarantee a Conservative majority in the next election as Joe is a perfect poster boy for the good old Libranos!

Worried? HAHAHAHA! My sides are hurting from laughing so hard!
Since I already commented quite positively about the pros and cons regarding the different leader hopefuls in the past in the appropriate threads I have already had my say. My opinion, being right, was not even considered useful even though I favour a good oposition - look what the liberals got away with when left unchallenged.
It is up to the members to elect their leader and if Volpe pulls it off who exactly are you planning to blame, Harper??
I personally don’t believe any of the eleven have what it takes but if Volpe, Frye or Rae make it then the liberals will showcase perfectly why they are incapable of leading for quite a while.

I simply note with interest, and without any further reference, the number of Liberal bloggers who apparently do not believe in democracy.

See it matters not if Volpe wins or not. If his numbers are true (35000 new members) that means he can hold that support over his rivals head to leverage whatever he wants in return for that support. The other part of it is that as long as Joe sticks around he is an easy target for all the other parties during an election. Its not so much that the CPC, NDP, and Bloc understand that fact, but that every delegate going to the convention will know it. Volpe may already have made a deal not to be king maker, but chief assassin to keep one of the candidates from winning. Think of the effect Joe’s endorsement could have on delegate selection if Volpe backed Iggy? Would that move increase Iggy’s support or make him a typhoid mary? Of course if they force Joe out, all that “support” leaves with him.
