I'll admit that I am completely out of my element when it comes to what is going on in the Middle East. You know the expression it is better to close your mouth and be thought the fool then to open it and confirm it. Typically I disregard that statement with reckless abandon but on this one I will wait a while.
But as a side note this brings me back to High School and the lesson where we learn that World War I was caused by the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand but with so little depth that it is a Trivial Pursuit answer. How could this trigger a World War? Well it is complicated...you know the drill.
Seeing how the Israel-Hezbollah/Hamas started with the hostage taking of a single soldier I am beginning to understand. Not that I am pulling a Newt Gingrich and calling this WWIII.

Wow, a modest blogger!!!
You’re not alone. Bush doesn’t understand the region either.
Neither, it would appear, does Harper who is now blending ignorance with his trademark indifference.
A Canadian family of 7 dies, and not a word of empathy from the PM. When will this man learn?

Two book I would recommend are “The Middle East: 2000 years of History from the rise of Christianity” by Bernard Lewis and “A Peace to End all Peace” by David Fromkin. One will give you the details on the rise of Islam and the other will give you the dteails surrounding the fall of the ottoman empire and what led to our immediate situation. Both are excellent.

I’m actually proud of Harper making us the only country (AFAIK) supporting Israel’s right to self-defense against terrorist attacks, without qualifications, such as the ridiculous notion of avoiding the use of “disproportiate force” (without which we would not have won WW2, btw).

Anon, Harper gave his condolences to the family this morning before he left Russia, it was televised. I notice not a word of empathy from you regarding the Canadian killed is Israel by Hezbollah.
Harper’s stance is perfectly balanced, he doesn’t support terrorists and isn’t afraid to say so.
