I'm clearly missing something

Tarek Fatah, formely of the Muslim Canadian Congress, believes that this is hate speach and according to the CTV report "amounts to a death threat".

...Professor Rinaldo Walcott, who holds the Canada Research Chair of Social Justice and Cultural Studies at U of T, said he objected to the university providing a platform for panelist Margaret Wente, a Globe and Mail columnist, accusing her of hate speech. Both Wente and Canadian Muslim panel member Tarek Fatah disagreed with the panel's academic experts.
Fatah, who is well known in Canada for smearing Islam and bashing Muslims, shouted "It has got nothing to do with youth [alienation]. It is 90-year- old ugly men spouting hate against fellow Muslims who are driving this nonsense."
Fatah and Wente are among a few who take every opportunity to badmouth Islam and Muslims in Canada.

Now Mohamed Elmasry is no stranger to controversy but there must be a heck of a lot more to this is Mr. Fatah is to be believed.
Call it a hunch but I bet the resignation has to do with Mr. Fatah preparing to run for the Liberal Party in the next election - mind you that is complete speculation on my part but I want the chance to say you heard it here first.
Instant Update: This CBC report ignores the Elmasry connection and in doing so makes more sense.

Update: Thanks to Bob Tarantino for this link - I would say that it would take a Bob Rae victory for Mr. Fatah to run for Parliament but I don't think it is a strectch to say that he will use his newly found spare time to help Mr. Rae out.
And on the issue on Benz, my wife and I went to Tunisia for our Honeymoon and all the taxi cabs were Mercedez-Benz, and they were crap.

Mr. Fatah preparing to run for the Liberal Party

Last time I heard, he was still a member of the NDP. Now, I am not saying he couldn’t run for the Liberals. It has been known to happen. I am just saying is all.

No he joined the LPC & is a big backer of Bob Rae. As much as I despise the Grits, if I were in the riding he was running in, i’d vote for the guy. He’s IMO a genuine hero for taking the stand he has

Tarek left the NDP in a huff. His explanation opens with the immortal words “For more than a dozen years i have sported a CCF-NDP licence plate on my Benz with pride…”.
