Another one bites the dust

It has quite a season of bloodletting in the blogosphere - the latest to go, though not technically a blog, is NealeNews. Quite a shame because I was a big consumer of this site. But I completely understand that this whole thing comes down to a time/reward equation. It takes a lot time to build and keep traffic. For a while watching your traffic trendlines increase is enough to keep you hooked but they peak and/or ebb the insentive to keep slogging is harder to find.
I hit times where I just can't convince myself that I have anything relevant to say - I am in one of those times right now - and where I would keep ploughing through before I have a harder time doing so now. The result, less frequent posting.
But enough about me. I will miss NealeNews.

Neale will hopefully resurface somewhere again.

Greg, just don’t let yourself think it is thankless.

You and your amigos are providing a valuable service, a great example is young Stephen Taylor’s getting a quasi apology out of the CBC which has been distorting the views of Canadians for decades.

Thank you!

It’s worth asking, first, how can one develop and maintain traffic, and secondly, could it be that there just aren’t that many “consumers” of blogs?

BBS:

I wondered when I saw the ‘no weekend’ updates post this past weekend. Nealenews will be missed.

On the flipside, I’m sure Jack’s Newswatch will appreciate the boost. He’s been hard at it for a while now and is well positioned to take over.

Best wishes to both.

Alberta Girl:

I too want to add my voice to thank you - and the rest of the “blogging community” - you have changed the face of “news” and have allowed those of us in one end of the country to see, hear and understand what makes the other side tick - albeit shaking our heads at some of it.

So a great big THANKYOU shouted out to you.

From the old classic - you don’t know what you got till it’s gone.

Rob R:

I just finished sending BRian a message with my gratitude for his efforts. The burgeoning blogosphere, I believe, is having a profound effect on the population of the planet. It is wresting the power of information dissemination from the elite publishing class and and entreching it with the people. That’s a good thing that can only get better.

I hit times where I just can’t convince myself that I have anything relevant to say…

I hear ya, buddy. Personally, I had to stop caring about traffic as much. Once I accepted the fact that irregular posting patterns would put a ceiling on how many people read my stuff, I was able to just post when I felt like I had something to say. Sometimes that’s three or four times a day, sometimes it’s once in two weeks.

Sucks for the readers - which is part of why they’ll stop coming back - but it keeps me sane.

Just don’t pull the plug on Political Staples anytime soon, ‘kay? The Canadians blogosphere needs its poll fix, and you’re the only one who can hook us up. ;)

That’s all blogging really should ever be —- saying something when you have something YOU want to say. It should always be just a way for you to do something you want to do, not something you have to do for the benefit of others.

Hope you keep posting here on your blog. All bloggers reach someone. Maybe not a lot of someones, but it’s all good no matter the ‘numbers’.

Thanks for all your efforts.

That’s exactly it. I really do think the key to blogging longevity is not trying to blog when you don’t want to. It’s one of the things that differentiates us from paid columnists, who have to produce because it’s their job.

That’s the beauty of RSS. I don’t have to keep coming back here, or to Damian’s site, or any other site, to see if anything has been posted. I just wait until my RSS reader says there is a new posting, and then I see if the article is worth a visit. Bloggers shouldn’t feel they have to post frequently to keep us readers happy. We’ll get our fix somewhere :-)
