As I mentioned a while back I was given some movies to review the first of which is
Of the movies that I was given this was the one I was most looking forward to, but to paraphrase Uncle Ben Parker, with great expectations comes harsher criticism. You have to admit the concept is very intriguing - what if the South won indeed? Problem is that suspension of disbelief is a terribly difficult thing in a western world that has abolished slavery and the mockmentary does not get passed this burden of proof. The failings of the movie can be summarized in the opening quote used by the film-maker.
...If you're going to tell people the truth, you better make them laugh; otherwise they will kill you. George Bernard Shaw
The movie pretends to be a documentary looking back at the past of the Confederate States of America and the laughs are supposed to come from the fake commercials - problem is that they are not funny, not even in an ironic way. Well they are funny in a "what pathetic production values" way but I doubt that is what the directors were going for. And the truth? I was never convinced that a C.S.A. could have actually come about - since this was the premise of the movie, in my opinion it failed.
This documentary is so unengaging that it makes for a painful viewing experience. The payoff at the end credits is actually quite good but I doubt many will make it that far.

For a better ‘alternate history’ try How Few Remain by Harry Turtledove. Similar premise but a bit more believable, although Abe Lincoln as a disgraced former president stumping for the Socialist Party is a bit outlandish.

Harry Turtledove’s series is much more believable, the South doesn’t win, it just survives and a peace treaty is signed by the CSA and the USA. Of course this leads to another war several years later and WW I and WW II fought on American soil. Oh yeah, the USA occupies Canada.
