It is not about the "smear campaign"

it is about the media frame. This Sheri DiNovo victory reminds me of the 2004 Federal Election and the "Martin supports child pornography" situation. In 2004 the media frame for the election was can Stephen Harper and the Conservatives be trusted to form a government? After the boys in the war room issued that press release the media and then in turn the public concluded that the CPC was not ready for prime time. This time the frame was what does this by-election show us about the Provincial Election next fall? Since things were judged with this in mind the issue was never going to be Sheri DiNovo views. Instead it was about Liberal desperation in what is supposed to be a safe seat. I don't know if the campaign against Ms. (Rev.?) DiNovo was coordinated but I assume it was not since the professionals really should have known better. Alas, sometimes you're Kicking Ass in Canadian Politics and sometimes you're getting your ass kicked.

Update: Just to prove my point watch the video in the CTV news story. The conclusion "just a taste of things to come in the next year". The story is about the Premier not about someone who is now a back bench MPP for the third party at Queens Park in a party that has no chance at forming government.

I wonder what Sylvia meant when she said she wouldn’t do anything different the next election. More of the same maybe.

There is a key difference between the two. The Conservatives at least partly admitted their error. The Liberals insisted to the end that they were only getting this information out there for the voters to decide. You have to give the voters credit. Ultimately, they ensured that decency prevailed.

Fergy:

If the Liberals thought that it was a sure thing, then they were deluded. Other then Gerard Kennedy’s overwhelming win that riding has been a provincial NDP stronghold for longer than I can remember.
