I don’t wish to turn this blog into a permanent home for contrary thinking (well not all the time anyway) but again, I can’t help thinking this. First we have this commentary from Don Martin and then this poll from the CBC. The takeaway from the poll is that the Liberals are back to being the second option (and number one federalist option) and the Conservatives are number three in Quebec. I realize that the environment and Afghanistan are weighing down Conservative support in Quebec but maybe, just maybe, Michael Ignatieff ‘nation’ gambit is starting to show dividends. To yet again be contrarian I do not think that the ‘nation’ comment representated Ignatieff having foot-in-mouth disease - he and his camp are far too smart for that. I argue that it was on purpose to gain support in Quebec, to rebuild the Mulroney coalition but this time for the Liberal party. This (Quebec, not necessarily the Mulroney coalition) is the Liberals only path to majority (and perhaps minority) if they can pull it off while holding firm in Ontario and the East. However it looks less likely with each passing week that Igatieff will get a chance to make this play.

Great restraint not commenting on the polls. Are you in a programme? ;)

Hey, that sounds familiar. But what do I know.

I am not sure if either of us is comforted by the fact that we came to the same conclusion. ;)

When Libs can’t/won’t deliver, Duceppe will use it against them. Quebecers don’t like to be teased.

The Tory troubles in Quebec didn’t start with Ignatieff’s “Nation gambit”, as you’d lead us to believe. It started when Harper took a strong stance on the Israeli-Lebanon war. Quebecers hate Americans and Jews (or anyone more successful then themselves) - and any party that cozies up to the those groups will find themselves in trouble.

Geez Dwayne, in that regard Quebecors sound an awful lot like the NDP.
