Check out Coby Cosh's take on the 'N word'. I haven't decided where I stand on his thoughts but they are thought provoking.
...In other words, it means bellowing your new definition of the word "nation" as loudly as you can until the actual meaning gives way under your assault. The phrase "a transcendent nationalism of ideals" refers to nothing out there in the world, any more than would talk of "a transcendent nationalism of food" or "a transcendent nationalism of traffic signals."
That being said, Cosh reflects approvingly on PM Clark's community of communities...

Does that make Colby the “busboy of the provinces”? ;)

All so blown out of proportion. Did the British North America Act not recognize the fact of two nations, so to speak? Did the British not allow the French to stay and be a nation in an English North America? Jesus, all this over really nothing! Stupid media and stupid politicians.

The less that an issue has to do with real rights, real money and real life, the longer and louder the political class will wail about it. The more they can distract people with impressive-sounding words like “nation” and “unity”, the less time (and media space) will be devoted to questioning the validity of the stones-to-bread pipedreams which are the stock in trade of politics.
Quebecker: I have no job, I can’t get into technical school, and I’m on a waiting list for chemotherapy. But by damn we made those Anglos recognize that we’re a nation!
ROCer: I’m getting hounded out of business by the CRA, my kids can’t find a job, and Dalton is going to raise my health tax every year until I haven’t got a cent left. But boy did that Stephen Harper show those Liberals and Blocheads who’s boss!
You see? Everyone wins.
