Gotta love Michael Iganatieff.
...Jack Layton's New Democrats are alienating core supporters by "propping up" the minority Conservative government and attempting to influence the federal plan to tackle climate change, says deputy Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff.
"There's something nauseating going on which Canadians have to notice," Ignatieff told the Star. "Layton gets up and pretends to oppose a government that he's propping up. He's got to decide what the hell he's doing here."
So let's get the record straight. The Conservatives introduce their Clean Air Act which is summarily dismissed by the opposition parties. Instead of letting it die and causing things to start from scratch the NDP forces a special committee to be created to make changes to the act and, if the NDP gets their way, it could get completely re-written. Isn't that exactly what Jack Layton said he would do if he got enough borrowed votes?

It is especially cheeky coming from a guy who is personally responsible for the extension of the mission in Afghanistan until 2009.

The liberals are reeling: they made the environment their central plank, banking on the CPC digging in its heels on the issue.
Now that Baird is extending his hand to Layton on this issue, its become a triangulation nightmare for the Libs.
In his hour long interview, on this issue, Dion made the absurd statement that “of course he would cooperate” with the other parties on this issue, but then went on to say that it would be “useless”.

So Iggy says Layton will alienate his base. Why would Iggy warn Layton ? If Iggy actually believed that Layton’s base might erode why wouldn’t he just sit tight and capitalize on it?
Answer: Iggy fears Layton’s strategy will work.
I’m not one that likes minority governments but for those that do this is the perfect pre-arranged marriage that Canadians are looking for:
-A Conservative government that won’t let the ecochondriacs destroy the economy and
-the Dippers who won’t let us capitalist pigs destroy the environment
This is a marriage made in heaven and Iggy knows it.

I agree nomdenet, it is the ideal minority situation.
I brought up that exact thing yesterday to someone. I liken it to provincial politics here in Sask. I just don’t actually understand how there can be enough room for three main parties.
As many have said before, the NDP and the CPC are ideologically driven. Given x issue, it is fairly easy to figure out what the CPC and the NDP are going to say. This is more often than not bankable.
The Liberals throw a wrench into the works, not centrist as much as secular. The only defining framework on their decisions is “where are the votes”.
That isn’t criticism, it’s obviously worked for them. On the other hand, the Liberals of today are not the Liberals of yesterday.
Cheers, lance

Layton’s gamble here is pretty simple. If the revised CAA passes, he’s got ammo to siphon off those left-leaning votes from the Grits, in those ridings in Ontario where the Tories have no chance anyway.

Wow. I find myself in the odd situation of agreeing with you guys instead debating you.
Strange feeling, that.
I think the thing that Iggy can’t figure out is that the NDP is willing to forgo the reins of power if it can get its policy objectives met by other means. The point is to get a good environmental plan in place that helps Canada clean up its air and reduce CO2 emissions. Iggy thinks everything is about getting votes and can’t quite see what the ‘angle’ is…he can’t fathom that perhaps there isn’t one, that the NDP will happily work with the CPC on this if it makes good public policy.
Me, I hope that if Jack and the NDP get a good deal out of Harper and the CPC, that they will actually live up to it.

How dare you suggest that the NDP would not live up to their bargains.

The point is to get a good environmental plan in place that helps Canada clean up its air and reduce CO2 emissions.
The point is to make sure that new legislation which will enrich and empower government bureaucrats and impoverish and weaken ordinary Canadians should be gridlocked, amended to death, and then disappear into the dustbin of history the next time a writ is dropped.
CO2 is a fake problem. While pollution from power plants can be harmful, having one or two smog alerts per year in one or two of the largest Canadian cities is better than having thousands of people die like dogs in non-airconditioned apartments.
