What does this mean?
...Meanwhile, Mr. Dion told his caucus members that the Liberals are the party of "the centre, we're a party of human rights and a party of child care."
We are the party of apples and the party of oranges.

Don’t forget my favourite - the “party of the Charter”.
Thanks, Stephane. We can look after our own kids.

I think he’s bloody delusional. He thinks everyone should love him and he can’t understand why they don’t. He’s on the edge of a nervous breakdown. He should be spending the next two weeks relaxing on a beach instead of going cross country telling everyone Harper is the devil.
Come to think of it, Dion reminds me of Adam Sandler’s mother in The Waterboy - everything’s the “devil”…

Somebody better tell that to The Great Liar, aka Dalton McGuinty, another “compassionate” Liberal:

What ARE Princess Steffi’s advisors thinking? That’s Herle, Reid & Co again, isn’t it?
Hold on. Why am I complaining? Be still, my heart.

Party of child care, huh? Are they also the party of stay-at-home Moms? If not, somebody better tell poor Sara at Choice for Childcare, who is still counting on Garth Turner to be her advocate.

I get the impression that Dion was trying to reel off something impressive off the top of his head. If he had stopped at “centre,” he would have been alright, but confusing issues with principles makes him sound like Damian Brooks (i.e., a babbler).
I suspect he wants to sell the Liberal Party as the party that has something for everyone, not realizing that in these days that line isn’t going to work anymore. There’s something about that mode of thinking that’s somewhat reminiscent of Joe Clark in his final days.

Man, the NDP can’t be happy with Dion tredding on his turf.

Which one is the party of lobster and the party of garlic butter? They’re getting my vote.

Inspiring oratory from le citoyen indeed.
When people start rolling their eyes when talking about you, like Mike Duffy did last week during a report to the Toronto affiliate, you’re coming dangerously close to a point of no return.
I don’t think he’s there yet, but Dion’s image with the media has virtually collapsed in a matter of weeks.
I guess sometimes people can smell weakness once the lid is opened.
It’s up to Dion to show us that he can slam that lid shut.

Correction - the party of child care promises, not actual child care, that’s what Canadian parents figured out how to do on their own long before Liberals made false promises.

Your tastes are too grand for me, Taylor. I’m for the party of beer and chicken wings, myself…

Dion nervously thinking to himself in the bathroom before coming out to make the statement:
holy crap…..I can’t go with the kyoto thing……it’s a bust….people are onto the fact that compliance is impossible and we Liberals made it…. worse……think of something…..you can do it….economy? no all that “taxes are useless” crap will kill me on that issue, not to mention kyoto……military? not even close………relations with the U.S.aaa…..yeah right….oh what the Hell I’ll say…oh I dunno, child care….and uh…..rights…yeah that’s it.

Dion is an academic, trapped within the verbiage of the social sciences/humanities. That means that words are reality; actions happen outside of the academic walls.
So, he is focused on ‘brainwashing’ the public. With words. He plunged into Kyoto, not for any action on it, but because he is trying to change the public perception of the Liberals.
He wants them to think, not that Liberals are corrupt (ie bad, polluting) but they are clean, pure. Like the forests and rivers. That’s why he’s become so ardently committed to the verbiage (not the actions - someone else does that).
He wants to manipulate the public into thinking of the Liberals as ‘kind’ (child care’); as champions of everyone (civil rights) and so on.
Dion is extremely manipulative; he’s trying to manipulate Canadians to change their image of the Liberals - into what HE says the Liberals are: pure, kind, just. Words, words, word. Never mind the words, Dion; the Liberals are, in fact, corrupt, self-focused on power, and patronage. And don’t give a damn about Canadians other than as manipulated voters.

To most staples commenters, we get it. Dion (Martin, Chretien, Kennnedy (my choice), Rae, (whatever rice-pudding entity) will say anything to get elected. It is the elephant in the room. ET is right. They don’t give a damn.
But let’s be careful and make sure someone gives a damn. (shaking head motion here…) I still can’t believe the Liberal brain trust is giving the conservatives the game this badly. Homers like Cherniak and Calgary can’t be serious…do you think what you’re proposing will convince anyone you have any principles? I’m a right of center (cenTER) mid of the road voter willing to give reasonable progressive policies a chance…the Liberals today are a joke! get to work!

Absolutely. They were also the party of no GST and no FTA. Well, until they got elected. And they were the party of ethical government, until BCA, Shawinigate, HRDC and Adscam, that is. And they were once the party of traditional marriage, until it became more profitable to do otherwise. And who can forget that they were the great advocates of Kyoto, until they actually had to do something about it.
So, of course they’re the party of human rights and childcare. It’s just something else they don’t have to be.
