On realignment

Brigitte Pellerin takes issue with the talk that the last Quebec election represented a realignment from the separatist/federalist frame to the left/right one.

...One, this famous realignment happened after the last referendum more than 10 years ago. If it were good for Canadian unity, we'd know by now. Two, while countless Rest of Canada denizens genuinely care what Quebecers are up to and how they're feeling about the relationship, Quebecers don't give a hoot about the welfare and happiness of Rest of Canada denizens. And three, well, there's that "autonomist" thing.

So if there was a realignment it was on the care/don't care axis.

Well goodbye then. Can they take that idiot Danny Williams with them when they go? The ROC should make this official and give them 1 year to come up with a foreign ministry and their own passports. They can have a Quebec interests section in Cdn embassies and consulates, but will be charged rent. After one year residents of Quebec will no longer be represented by the Cdn government abroad. They can continue to use the Cdn dollar but get no say in its governance, like Costa Rica and the US dollar. We’ll give them 25% of the Cdn Forces Equipment and they are on their own. We’ll jointly manage the St Lawrence Seaway. The lawyers will come in complicating everything with a bunch of fine print but the big picture stuff is actually pretty simple. People who live in Quebec but want to remain Canadian citizens will have declare that and live in Quebec under whatever rules the newly sovereign nation sets for foreign residency.

Bye Bye now

I agree with her analysis. You should have included the next paragraph :

I understand teenagers who want independence as long as Mommy continues to cook lunch, do the laundry and provide an allowance along with high-speed Internet. It’s a bit odd coming from Mario Dumont, a 36-year-old professional politician.

That description fits Steve’s new buddy to a “t”. I suspect others have this impression of him too. I wonder why Steve is so silent on the issue?
